What are Neuromodulators?
Neuromodulators are frequently referred to as “wrinkle relaxers”. Essentially, a neuromodulator alters the communication between the nerves and the muscles. This is not a permanent effect and will not cause any long-term nerve damage. By injecting neuromodulators into the muscles of the face, the overlying skin starts to relax, and the skin will smooth out over time, thereby erasing or softening fine lines.
What are Neuromodulators used for?
Botox® is one of the best-known neuromodulators. It has been approved in Canada since 2001 for facial aesthetics. It is also used as a treatment for muscular disorders, headaches and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). Botox® for some of these indications is only permitted to be offered by specially trained physicians. For your safety and protection, only Dr. Carmichael does injections in her office.
Dr. Carmichael has been providing Botox® services since 2015. She uses Botox® for aesthetic purposes and hyperhidrosis. Usually, treatment for headaches is done by a neurologist. When injected by a trained professional, Botox® is a very safe and effective way to give your skin a refreshed, more youthful appearance.
What does Botox® treatment look like?
If you are interested in Botox®, you will come in for an initial consultation with Dr. Carmichael. We will take a number of photos of your face and discuss your concerns. Botox® works well to decrease the lines of the upper face and around the eyes. It can also be used to soften lip lines, and to provide a look of fullness to the lips (often referred to as a “lip flip”). For your comfort, we will apply numbing cream to your skin and will use ice to the target areas. The actual injection time is usually no more than 15 minutes.
What can I expect?
The effects of Botox® on the face are seen within 3-14 days after injection, and the effects usually last for about 3 months. For your skin to maintain a smooth appearance, Botox® should be repeated every 3-4 months.
For hyperhidrosis, the effects may last about 6 months.
